Broncos LB Alex Singleton had the best season of his career in 2022

When the Denver Broncos signed inside linebacker Alex Singleton to a one-year contract last spring, he was originally expected to contribute primarily on special teams.

Injuries at ILB forced the Broncos to change and their plans and Singleton ended up starting 12 games, initially filling in for Josey Jewell, then later taking over after Jonas Griffith went down with an injury.

Singleton took advantage of his opportunity, leading the team with 163 in tackles, marking the best season of his career.

“I mean, it’s cool,” Singleton said after the team’s season finale on Jan. 8. “It’s definitely something that would be cool in the future. I would rather have a lot more wins obviously, that would have been better, but it’s nice. Nice to have, but it would probably be more [meaningful] when I’m older.”

Singleton, 29, is now scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March. After playing so well last fall, he should be a candidate to get an extension from Denver’s front office.

“I loved every second here,” Singleton said. “I think we’ve said it at least in our room the last couple of days as the season is ending, you know, playing for Coach ‘E’ [Ejiro Evero] and with our guys in our room. Starts with our coach, and you know, obviously Josey, Justin [Strnad], Jonas — it’s been the best year of my career. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. It wasn’t the [amount of] wins we wanted, but we had a lot of fun.”

The Broncos ended the year with a 5-12 record, but the defense certainly wasn’t to blame for the team’s struggles. If Denver wants to keep the defense together in 2023, re-signing Singleton would be a key step.
