Broncos have several options at safety

After releasing safety Darian Stewart, the Denver Broncos did not sign any of the safeties available during NFL free agency. Perhaps that’s because the team still has seven talented safeties in Justin Simmons, Will Parks, Su’a Cravens, Jamal Carter, Dymonte Thomas, Trey Marshall and Shamarko Thomas on the roster.

Or maybe Denver plans to add a safety through the draft? Or perhaps the team plans to play newly signed defensive back Kareem Jackson as a safety?

Speaking at the NFL owners meetings on Sunday, Broncos coach Vic Fangio indicated that the team has many options.

“I’d say it’s pretty wide open,” Fangio said, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. “Again, Kareem could be a guy that could play there also. I’m not saying that to indicate anything other than he’s capable of playing safety. So we’ve got guys available that can play . . . let’s see what his draft brings and college free agency and go to work.”

Those remarks from Fangio seemingly suggest that the team’s two starters may already be on the roster but the team hasn’t ruled out adding more defensive backs to the roster. On to the draft!
