Broncos grant Nick Williams’ request to be cut

The Denver Broncos have released wide receiver Nick Williams, the team announced Monday.

KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis and The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala both reported that Williams asked to be cut and Denver granted his request. The 28-year-old receiver knew he was unlikely to make the Broncos’ 53-man roster and wanted a chance to catch on with another team.

Williams (5-10, 184 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Connecticut with the Washington Redskins in 2013. He went on to spend time with the Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams before signing with Denver on July 26.

The Broncos also parted ways with defensive lineman Zach Kerr and outside linebacker Dekoda Watson on Monday. Coach Vic Fangio said the team wanted to give the players an early chance to join another team.

“One thing was that to give them both an extra week ahead of the major cut down to possibly hook on with another team,” Fangio said. “We felt good about the other guys at those positions.”

NFL teams must trim their rosters from 90 players to 53 players by Saturday afternoon. Denver currently has 87 players on the roster.
