Broncos GM John Elway posts tribute to late Packers QB Bart Starr

Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr, a Green Bay Packers legend, died at age 85 on Sunday.

Starr played for the Packers from 1956-1971 and coached for the team in 1972 and again from 1975-1983. Denver Broncos general manager John Elway watched Starr as a kid and posted a tribute to the former quarterback on Twitter.

The Packers released the following statement from Starr’s family on Sunday:

We are saddened to note the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bart Starr. He battled with courage and determination to transcend the serious stroke he suffered in September 2014, but his most recent illness was too much to overcome. While he may always be best known for his success as the Packers quarterback for 16 years, his true legacy will always be the respectful manner in which he treated every person he met, his humble demeanor, and his generous spirit.

Starr won three NFL championships and two Super Bowls with Green Bay. He is survived by his wife, Cherry.
