Broncos GM John Elway plans to build around QB Drew Lock

Broncos general manager John Elway and coach Vic Fangio both spoke about the team’s backup quarterback situation at the NFL combine this week. Denver needing a backup implies that the starter is already known.

Drew Lock, entering his second year in the NFL, is the guy.

“I think where we sit right now there is no question that Drew is the guy that we’re looking to . . . . we’re excited about Drew,” Elway said Tuesday. “It’s nice to have a young guy to be able to build around and feel like you got a guy that has the potential to be a long-time starter for you.

“The sky’s the limit for him. It depends on how he continues to improve. We feel better in that situation.”

The Broncos have been looking for a solution at QB ever since Peyton Manning retired following the 2015 season. Lock, who went 4-1 as a starter last year, appears to be the answer.

“He played five games which I think was very important for him to do,” Fangio said of Lock’s rookie season. “He did well. We’re optimistic.”

Lock completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 1,020 yards with seven touchdown passes and three interceptions in 2019. Lock will look to build on those numbers in 2020 after Elway adds some weapons to the roster.
