Last month, the Kansas City Chiefs signed quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a record-breaking contract extension worth up to $503 million.
After signing that massive deal, Mahomes bought part of the Kansas City Royals. Being a part-owner of an MLB team shouldn’t take up too much of Mahomes’ time but Denver Broncos general manager John Elway jokingly suggested that it should.
“First of all, I hope they hire him in the front office, so he can spend half of his time over with the Royals,” Elway said during a Zoom conference call with reporters on July 28. “That’d be fine with me, too. Let him spend all his time over there.”
Elway said Mahomes’ contract was well-deserved but he wishes Kansas City had used even more salary cap space to sign him.
“I’m happy with the fact that he got that contract. As an opponent and AFC West opponent, I wish he would have gotten more. I think they underpaid him,” Elway joked.
The NFL will have a lower-than-expected salary cap in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. If the cap is set at $175 million, the Chiefs will have negative $25,708,490 in cap space next year.
