Broncos found a ‘gamer’ in Brandon Allen

Before Brandon Allen filled in for an injured Joe Flacco in Week 9, most Broncos fans probably assumed he was going to be a journeyman career backup in the NFL. After throwing three touchdown passes and starting in a win and in a near-upset, Allen’s beginning to get a little more respect.

“I think he’s a gamer,” Denver coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday. “Like I told you guys before he played his first game, I didn’t know exactly how he would do, but [any struggles] wouldn’t be because he was overwhelmed by the situation.

“He’s verified that. He likes playing football. He enjoys being out there in the fray. He’s got good quarterback instincts. I like him. He’s taking advantage of his opportunity.”

Allen has demonstrated composure and hasn’t been rattled by getting thrown into the starting lineup on short notice. The Arkansas product has completed 49.2 percent of his passes for 433 yards with three touchdowns and one interception through two games.

On Sunday, Allen will face a Bills defense that ranks third against the pass this season, allowing an average of just 197.8 yards per game.
