The Denver Broncos will need to find a new offensive coordinator this offseason.
Denver has fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported Sunday. Broncos coach Vic Fangio made the decision, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.
This move is a little surprising given that Fangio said during his end-of-season press conference in December that he believed all of the team’s coordinators would be brought back for the 2020 season.
The move is less surprising when considering Denver’s poor numbers on offense this season. Klis pointed out that the Broncos were the only team to finish in the bottom five of the league in points, yards, third-down percentage and red-zone percentage. Not exactly a good look for Scangarello.
The Broncos now have an opening at offensive coordinator. It seems unlikely that the team would bring back Gary Kubiak, who now serves as the Minnesota Vikings’ assistant head coach and offensive advisor. His son, Klint, might be a candidate, though.
Klint Kubiak served as an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach in Denver from 2016-2018 and served as Minnesota’s QB coach in 2019.
It’s hard to imagine that the Broncos would fire their offensive coordinator without a potential replacement candidate in mind, so the position may be filled quickly. Expect the team to bring in candidates for interviews soon.
