Broncos fans shouldn’t be surprised by Sean Payton’s hiring process for staff

Denver Broncos fans (and pundits) grew anxious while Sean Payton‘s hiring process for the team’s coaching staff has dragged on for more than three weeks.

The team’s lack of official announcements should not have been confused for inactivity, though. Fans seem to have quickly forgotten that the club’s lengthy head coach hiring process ultimately ended with Payton landing the job. That hiring process is now largely viewed as a success, but the search was questioned while it dragged on.

Similar impatience has emerged while Payton builds his staff.

We have been tracking the team’s known coaching additions on Broncos Wire and as of Wednesday, we only knew of five new additions. Eleven more coaches had also been hired, but Denver had kept that information private.

Payton himself confirmed on Wednesday evening that the club had hired 16 coaches and had five positions left to fill.

Payton’s been busy building the staff — we just haven’t been given blow-by-blow updates on the team’s search. That shouldn’t be surprising.

When Payton was introduced as the club’s new head coach earlier this month, he made it clear that the Broncos aimed to keep a more low profile this offseason compared to last year.

“The work has started. I kind of use this term, ‘A little bit more anonymous donors this season,’” Payton said on Feb. 6. “Just know that we’re working, but with a little bit less visibility on social media and all those other things. We’re going to get to work, and ultimately, it’s how we do in the fall [that matters].”

Denver’s facility has been less prone to leaks since Payton’s arrival, and that’s not a bad thing. The Broncos will announce their coaching staff when they’re ready. The team is presumably waiting to make one big announcement after all of the positions have been filled. That’s not the way it’s been done in the past, but Denver has a new sheriff in town now. Payton will do it his way.
