Broncos DL Derek Wolfe a big fan of Vic Fangio’s defense

During his media availability after practice on May 30, Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe said he felt like he was born to play in Vic Fangio’s defense. Just what is it that the defender likes about Fangio’s 3-4 front?

“Alignment-wise it’s like — it’s old school defense where you line up and you beat the guy in front of you,” Wolfe said. “We’re going to be moving. You beat him, beat him, beat him, and then next thing you know we’re slanting somewhere and moving around and misdirecting.

“As far as the pass-rush game goes, we have some really fun pass-rush games that are just different. Things that aren’t just me setting things up for everybody else. It’s actually a little bit of the opposite. I can actually get to get back there and make some plays and vise versa.”

Wolfe has totaled his fair share of sacks over the last few years — 26 since 2012 — but he’s often asked to do the dirty work on the defensive line, setting up players like Von Miller to run through an opening.

That will still happen in 2019 but we might start to see Wolfe get set up on occasion as well, perhaps with Miller being the one to take attention away from him. It’ll be interesting to see how Fangio uses the team’s defensive linemen and linebackers as pass rushers this season.
