Broncos DE Derek Wolfe supports Chris Harris’ bid to get paid

Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris has been holding out from the team’s offseason program in hopes of a new contract. His current deal is set to expire after the 2019 season and he’s seeking an extension — and a raise.

Former Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey has voiced his support for Harris and linebacker Von Miller has said he is not worried about Harris’ holdout. During a press conference on April 9, defensive end Derek Wolfe added his name to the list of players backing Harris.

“Chris is one of the best cornerbacks in the league,” Wolfe said. “I think he deserves to get paid, and he deserves to do whatever he feels is right for himself. He already did his discount deal, so it’s time for him to get his money. That’s how he feels. I think everybody can relate to that. You’ve got that short time span in this league, so you have to earn as much as you can.

“Especially if you take a discount on that first deal. It’s not like we didn’t make enough money to take care of ourselves for the rest of our lives [but] to me, he’s just trying to make that so he can live an even better lifestyle than he already plans on. He’s got a lot of kids.”

Harris, 29, will earn a base salary of $7.8 million this year before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
