Broncos cut QB Kevin Hogan

The Broncos have cut 26-year-old quarterback Kevin Hogan, as first reported today by KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. The move has since been confirmed by other media outlets.

This might be a sign that Denver will have Brett Rypien begin the year as Joe Flacco’s backup until Drew Lock recovers from a thumb injury. Or, the Broncos might be trying to trade for a QB or eyeing up a candidate on the waiver wire.

Hogan (6-3, 218 pounds) started for Stanford from 2012-2015 and set a school record with 10,634 yards from scrimmage. He was then selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft.

Hogan failed to make Kansas City’s 53-man roster as a rookie and signed with the Browns’ practice squad. Cleveland promoted him to their active roster two months into the season, and he ended up dressing for four games in 2016.

Hogan dressed for four games again in 2017 and earned one start. The Browns traded him to the Redskins last April but he failed to make Washington’s 53-man roster. Denver signed him last September and he spent the 2018 season as the Broncos’ reserve quarterback.

Hogan went 33-of-65 for 311 yards with one touchdown pass against three interceptions in five preseason games this summer.
