Broncos cut QB Brett Rypien

The Denver Broncos have cut undrafted rookie quarterback Brett Rypien, The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala first reported Saturday. The news has since been confirmed by multiple media outlets.

Rypien (6-2, 210) had a productive career at Boise State, setting a Mountain West Conference record with 13,581 passing yards. Despite breaking nearly all of Boise State’s passing records, Rypien went undrafted in April’s draft.

Rypien signed with Denver as a college free agent and competed with Drew Lock and Kevin Hogan for a roster spot this summer. He went 27-of-44 passing for 207 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in preseason.

The Broncos also cut Hogan on Saturday, leaving Joe Flacco and Lock as the only QBs currently on the roster. The team will likely either trade for another QB or sign/claim one this weekend.

Rypien, 23, is the nephew of former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, who won two Super Bowls during his time with the Redskins.

If Rypien clears waivers, he will be eligible for the Broncos’ 10-man practice squad. Denver is probably hoping to stash him on their practice squad for the 2019 season. The Broncos have until 2:00 p.m. MT on Saturday to submit a 53-man roster.
