Broncos coach Vic Fangio planning to coach in Hall of Fame Game after being treated for a kidney stone

Story update: Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth tweeted that Vic Fangio is planning to coach in tonight’s game after being treated for a kidney stone this afternoon. See our original post below.

Talk about bad timing.

Kidney stones are never fun to deal with, but having to pass one on the same day you’re about to make your head coaching debut in the NFL has to rank among the worst times possible.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio spent “a good part of the day” in a Cleveland hospital trying to pass a kidney stone Thursday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He has not yet passed the stone but Schefter reports Fangio is “doing better” and will try to coach tonight.

If Fangio is unable to coach during the Hall of Fame Game, Denver will have defensive coordinator Ed Donatell run the defense and offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello run the offense. The team has not commented on the status of Fangio.

The Broncos will face the Falcons in Canton, Ohio, to begin the NFL preseason. The contest will begin at 6 p.m. MT and will be nationally televised on NBC.
