Broncos coach Vic Fangio reveals quarterback plan for OTAs

There will be a quarterback competition in Denver this offseason. It just won’t be for the team’s starting job.

When the Broncos begin organized team activities (OTAs) on Monday, Joe Flacco will be the understood starter.

“Joe will take all of the reps with the first team,” coach Vic Fangio said Sunday. “Then we have an open competition after that and we’ll randomly play those with the 2s and the 3s when we do our reps.”

Drew Lock, a second-round pick in this year’s draft, will be competing with veteran Kevin Hogan for the backup quarterback job. Brett Rypien, who signed with the team as an undrafted free agent, is the presumed fourth-string QB at the moment.

Denver may carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, giving Rypien a shot to make the team. Even if Hogan beats him out, though, Rypien will still be a strong candidate for the 10-man practice squad.

In other Broncos position battle news, defensive back Kareem Jackson will continue working at safety at the start of OTAs.

“He’s still going to get a lot of work at safety, but he will get some work at corner and nickel throughout the process,” Fangio said. “It might not be tomorrow, but it will be through the next 12 practices.”

Jackson’s competition at safety includes Justin Simmons, Will Parks, Su’a Cravens, Dymonte Thomas and Jamal Carter.
