Broncos coach Vic Fangio on Kyler Murray: “He’s a special athlete”

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was measured at 5-10 at the NFL combine earlier this offseason, which is much shorter than the average height of starting quarterbacks in the league today.

Seattle’s Russell Wilson (5-11) has proved that height isn’t everything, though. Broncos coach Vic Fangio doesn’t seem to believe Murray’s stature will hinder his chances of having success as a pro.

“Good quarterbacks come in all shapes, sizes, styles and personalities,” Fangio said at the NFL owners meetings Tuesday.

When asked about this year’s quarterback class — and specifically about Murray — Fangio noted that he hadn’t started seriously studying draft-eligible QBs yet. He’s been impressed by what he’s seen of Murray so far, though.

“The only thing I’ve seen of him is what I saw on TV up to this point,” Fangio said. “Obviously, he’s a special athlete. Dynamic player, fast, elusive, can throw.

“This guy can throw, obviously. That jumps out at you easily from TV scouting. I think he’s going to be a good player in this league. He’ll be a success as a quarterback.”

Denver may be in the market for a quarterback in April but Murray is unlikely to still be on the board when the Broncos go on the clock with the 10th overall pick. There have been rumors that Murray could go as early as No. 1 overall to the Cardinals.

Fangio seems to believe Murray will have success wherever he lands.
