Broncos coach Vic Fangio on Bryce Callahan’s injury: ‘It’s a concern’

Denver Broncos cornerback Bryce Callahan has been nursing a foot injury all offseason and was inactive for the team’s season opener against the Oakland Raiders on “Monday Night Football” in Week 1.

Denver’s defense missed Callahan in Oakland as second-year cornerback Isaac Yiadom struggled as the No. 2 cornerback across from Chris Harris. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr targetted Yiadom early and often and Oakland had little trouble moving up and down the field.

After a 24-16 loss, Broncos coach Vic Fangio was asked about Callahan’s injury status.

“It’s a concern,” Fangio said, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. “He didn’t have a setback this week. He’s just not ready yet.”

It’s good that Callahan hasn’t suffered any setbacks but the fact that his injury is concerning to the team’s coaching staff might be a sign that the cornerback won’t be ready to play in Week 2, either. That’s just speculation, though — we’ll know more about his status when Denver returns to practice Wednesday.

Callahan signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Broncos in March. They desperately need him to get healthy and back on the field.
