Broncos coach Vic Fangio explains 2-point attempt and botched fake punt

The Broncos offense drove right down the field on their first drive against the Chiefs on Thursday evening and scored on a Royce Freeman touchdown run. Denver initially planned to kick an extra point but after Kansas City was penalized on the attempt, the Broncos opted to accept the penalty and place the ball at the 1-yard line for a two-point attempt.

The math made sense: It’s easier to score from the 1-yard than from the 2-yard line, so going for two was logical. Phillip Lindsay failed to score on a short run, though, and coach Vic Fangio isn’t sure he would make the same decision again early in a game.

“The go for two, it’s a pretty high percentage from the 1-yard line,” Fangio said Thursday evening. “That’s one of those analytical things.

“I’m not sure if I’ll do it the next time because I believe the two-point play needs to be basically ignored until the fourth quarter or late in the third, but for 1 yard to get an extra point, I thought it was worth the gamble.”

Later in the game, Denver attempted a fake punt in the second quarter and failed miserably.

Fangio explained what happened following the eventual 30-6 loss.

“The fake punt was botched,” Fangio said. “We had a receiver that was trying to get out of the flat. He didn’t get out and kind of left our punter in a bind there.”

It appears that running back Devontae Booker was supposed to run out to the left but wasn’t able to get there soon enough.

The Broncos are now 2-5 and sitting in last place in the AFC West.
