Broncos coach Vic Fangio beats Falcons, kidney stones

Before the Broncos played the Falcons in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday evening, first-year coach Vic Fangio spent time in the hospital getting treatment for kidney stones.

“I went to sleep [Wednesday] night and at about 1 a.m. I had some pain,” Fangio recalled. “It woke me up and I thought it was an upset stomach. I was able to fall back asleep for another hour or so. I woke up again and I knew it was not an upset stomach.

“I hung around until the meetings were over and then we went and got it checked out. Got a CAT scan. The guys guessed that’s what it was, and they were right.”

Fangio wasn’t able to pass the stones in the hospital but he received medicine that helped him coach in Thursday’s game, a 14-10 win.

“It wasn’t too bad,” Fangio said of the pain. “By the time I left the hospital, things were under control. I don’t believe I’ve passed them yet. It’s done most of its traveling by the time I left there. If you know anything about kidney stones.”

Kidney stones are never fun but securing a victory in his first game as a head coach in the NFL helped Fangio overcome the discomfort.

“As we all know, nobody is in there doing cheetah flips and cartwheels about that, like they would in a regular season game, but winning’s cured more ills than penicillin. It’s always nice to win.”
