Broncos claim QB Brandon Allen off waivers

The Denver Broncos claimed quarterback Brandon Allen off waivers Sunday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported. The news has since been confirmed by multiple media outlets.

Allen (6-2, 2016) was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Arkansas. He served as the Jags’ third-string QB as a rookie before failing to make their 53-man roster in 2017.

Allen signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 to be their third-string QB and spent most of the year on L.A.’s practice squad. Allen spent all of the 2018 season on the Rams’ practice squad and failed to make the team’s active roster this summer.

In a preseason game one week ago, Allen went 12-of-19 for 162 yards passing in a 10-6 win over the Broncos. He also rushed once for seven yards. Allen has not yet dressed for a regular season NFL game but he appears likely to begin the year as Denver’s backup quarterback.

Joe Flacco will start and Allen will be the No. 2, at least until second-round draft choice Drew Luck recovers from a thumb injury.

Denver also claimed three other players off waivers Sunday.
