Broncos CEO's arrival at crucial time

The Broncos are hoping former Storm CEO Dave Donaghy can bring their secret to success to Brisbane. (AAP)

Brisbane coach Kevin Walters hopes incoming chief executive Dave Donaghy will bring some of Melbourne's recruitment and retention sparkle when he puts his feet under the desk at Red Hill next week.

The former journalist worked for the AFL's Brisbane Lions and the Melbourne NRL club before rising to the top job at the Storm in 2015.

Since then they've finished the regular season no worse than fourth, winning two titles and three minor premierships despite the departures of Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk.

Meanwhile Brisbane, beaten in golden point of the 2015 decider, have fallen off a cliff with two wins from their last 25 games and a raft of departures headlined by David Fifita and Tom Dearden.

"He'll be a big part (of our recruitment strategy) and it'll be great to have Dave in the building," Walters said of Donaghy's arrival.

"He had a lot of success down at the Storm in his work there ... it was a big job (as interim CEO) for Neil (Monaghan) the last few weeks and months but nice to have Dave now in control."

Brisbane have made 10 changes to their halves in the last 17 games, with Dearden's move to North Queensland next year confirmed and long-term No.6 Anthony Milford off contract beyond this season.

Walters is hopeful centre Kotoni Staggs agrees to an extension inside the next week, admitting that signature needs finalising before they can move to their next target.

English Super League pair Aidan Sezer and Gareth Widdop as well as veteran NRL halves Shaun Johnson (Cronulla), Adam Reynolds (South Sydney), Mitch Moses (Parramatta) and even Queensland captain Daly Cherry-Evans (Manly) have all been linked to the club.

"We're looking at our roster, trying to improve it all the time. Are their good players on the market available? Yes there are. Will we be speaking to them? Yes we will," he said when pressed on the likelihood of the club recruiting an experienced playmaker.

"I've been placed here to make the place better and that's what we're trying to do this year.

"At different stages I feel the team has improved and then we take a few steps back so tomorrow night (against Gold Coast) we're going to take a couple of steps forward."
