Broncos can’t turn on each other after tough start

The Broncos have been close, but close isn’t good enough in the NFL.

In Week 1, Denver lost to the Raiders by a touchdown and two-point conversion. In Week 2, they lost to the Bears on a last-second field goal. In Week 3, they turned the ball over three times and only lost by 11 points to the Packers. On Sunday, they lost to the Jaguars on another last-second field goal.

The Broncos are 0-4 but there’s no time for them to feel sorry for themselves.

“If you consider yourself a tough NFL football player, well then damn, look at yourself in the mirror, pick yourself up and get ready to go back to work,” quarterback Joe Flacco said following a 26-24 loss to Jacksonville.

Despite the team’s poor start, Denver coach Vic Fangio still has faith in his players’ abilities to turn things around.

“I still believe in them,” Fangio said. “I think they’re winners as individuals. We have to find a way to be winners as a team and we’re not playing well enough consistently enough to do that, but I do believe in these guys.”

With 12 games remaining, the Broncos can’t afford to have a divided locker room. After Sunday’s game, defensive end Derek Wolfe said the team has to fight through the adversity they have faced this year.

“I think that is something that will either make or break us as a team,” Wolfe said. “You either stick together or you separate, and everyone becomes an individual and does what is best for themselves. That’s when football isn’t fun anymore whenever you aren’t playing as a team.

“So hopefully we can do a good job of staying together and use this. Adversity can bring you together or break you, so we have to use this to bring us together, use it as a positive otherwise we are in for another [bad] season.”

Up next for the Broncos is a road game agaisnt the 2-2 Chargers.
