Broncos camp buzz: What’s new in Denver ahead of the 2022 season?

With training camp set to begin this week, Broncos Wire will begin contributing weekly camp updates to Sports Weekly, which we will also share on the site. Here’s the first update ahead of practice beginning Wednesday.

What’s new: What’s not new with the Broncos? A new ownership group led by Walmart heir Rob Walton is set to takeover the club this summer. In addition to new ownership, the team has a new head coach in Nathaniel Hackett (a former Packers offensive coordinator) and a new QB in Russell Wilson. Denver sent three players — TE Noah Fant among them — and five draft picks to Seattle in exchange for Wilson in March. To help replace Fant, the Broncos used a third-round pick to select TE Greg Dulcich in April’s draft.

After trading away OLB Von Miller mid-season in 2021, Denver replaced him this spring by signing ex-Cowboys pass rusher Randy Gregory to a five-year, $70 million contract. Elsewhere on defense, the Broncos let CB Bryce Callahan walk in free agency and they signed ex-49er K’Waun Williams to replace him.

Camp battles: Denver did not re-sign Alexander Johnson, leaving an opening at ILB. The candidates to replace him include second-year LB Jonas Griffith and free agent addition Alex Singleton. On offense, the Broncos opted to not re-sign RT Bobby Massie. Billy Turner is the favorite to replace him, but he’ll face competition from Calvin Anderson and Tom Compton this summer. Turner played under Hackett in Green Bay, perhaps giving him an edge in the competition.
