Broncos acquire Russell Wilson in blockbuster trade with Seahawks

The AFC West just added another big-name quarterback to the mix.

After missing out on Aaron Rodgers, who returned to the Green Bay Packers on a massive extension, the Denver Broncos have made a blockbuster trade to acquire Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. ESPN’s Adam Schefter calls it “one of the largest trades in NFL history.” Former Missouri QB Drew Lock, DT Shelby Harris, TE Noah Fant, multiple first-round draft picks and multiple second-round draft picks are reportedly going to the Seahawks in return.

Wilson will join a stacked AFC West division that includes QBs Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Derek Carr. He’s the second quarterback in the division with a Super Bowl title, having won Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seahawks.

Wilson has only faced the Mahomes era Chiefs once during his career, which happened back in the 2018 NFL season. The Seahawks won that game 38-31, with Wilson completing 18-of-29 passes for three touchdowns and no interceptions. That was against a Bob Sutton-led defense, though. He’s never once gone against Steve Spagnuolo, who now has a new adversary in the AFC West to prepare for. In Wilson’s one other matchup against the Chiefs back in 2014, the Chiefs won 24-20 with Wilson throwing 20-of-32 passes for 178 yards and two scores.

After being in quarterback purgatory for several years, Denver now has a competent veteran to lead the team. It’ll make things tougher for Kansas City within the division, but that also means the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders will have a tougher time winning games too.
