Bromley fire: Huge blaze breaks out at former gas works next to Tesco in south-east London

A huge fire broke out at a former gas works next to a Tesco supermarket in south-east London.

Thick black smoke billowed into the air after the blaze erupted in Homesdale Road, Bromley, on Wednesday morning.

The London Fire Brigade sent four fire engines and 25 firefighters to the scene.

Nearby residents were told to keep their windows and doors closed. Police said that extensive road closures were put in place in the surrounding area.

Bromley MPS tweeted: "We have extensive road closures around Homesdale Road #Bromley whilst a fire in the old gas works is brought under control by @BromleyLFB."

A spokesman for the brigade added: “The brigade's 999 control officers have taken around 65 calls to the fire.

“The brigade was called at 11.31am. Fire crews from Bromley and Sidcup fire stations are at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”
