Broken traffic lights and yet more flooding - another day of problems on the A555 Airport Relief Road

There's been another flood on the A555 Airport Relief Road today.

An electrical fault with a set of traffic lights tripped out the system which pumps water away from the carriageway, causing it to briefly stop working.

It led to water, which has since receded, flooding the Hazel Grove end of the road on Wednesday lunchtime.

But as of evening rush hour on Wednesday, the traffic lights at the crossroads with the A523 Macclesfield Road are still not working, leaving drivers to cautiously navigate the busy crossing themselves.

Stockport Council confirmed that an electrical fault with a traffic signal tripped out the road's pumping system, causing water to pool on the carriageway.

It's far from the first time the £290m road, which opened in October 2018 after being extended to the A6 at Hazel Grove, has experienced problems.

Last year parts of the carriageway were repeatedly submerged by flood water after heavy rainfall, leading to delays, closures and a number of vehicles becoming stranded.

In April, three million litres of rainfall had to be pumped off the road, after a month's worth of rain fell on Manchester in a day.

It flooded again in July, and August, prompting the replacement of failing water pumps and the removal of silt from drainage tanks underneath the road in a bid to solve the problem.

But the road flooded again in October, and an investigation into why the road keeps flooding was announced.
