'Broken down' car issued with parking ticket

Most drivers will know the stomach-sinking feeling of returning to your car to find a bright yellow parking ticket slapped on its windscreen.

Imagine then the pain of returning to your broken down car to find it's not only the cost of repairs you've got to pay for, but the cost of a parking fine as well.

It appears one driver has experienced just that, as a passer-by spotted a blue Volvo in the Gloucestershire town of Winchcombe with both a 'broken down' sign and a parking ticket on it.

The car was spotted half on double yellow lines and half in a parking bay on April 29. The rear of the car was sticking out towards the middle of the narrow street.

The man was interested to see that the car had a parking ticket stuck on it but also a large note inside the windscreen.

It was on the driver’s side of the vehicle and said, in capital letters: “Broken down, will retrieve asap."

The passer-by, who sent the pictures to Gloucestershire Live , said it seemed a harsh decision to issue the driver with a ticket.

He said: “Welcome to Winchcombe, if your car breaks down, you get a ticket!’

Alexis Newport, Gloucestershire County Council’s parking manager, said: “Where a vehicle is parked illegally, contravening the parking restrictions, we will issue a penalty notice.

“If there are circumstances which the driver believes should be taken into account, we would of course consider these along with any available supporting evidence as part of the appeal process.”
