'Broken door handle' sparks huge emergency police and fire convoy

A broken door handle sparked a convoy of police and fire engines to descend on a block of flats last night.

Four police cars with lights and sirens were sighted at around 10pm heading through Runcorn to Framlington Court in Castlefields, followed by three fire engines.

Police officers could be seen by the stairwell inside the apartment block along with firefighters, while outside a patrol car temporarily blocked traffic turning in from Halton Brow.

One fire engine and some of the police presence quickly departed leaving one fire engine and two police cars.

Residents peered from their windows as the emergency services dealt with the incident.

However, the call out - which was initially reported as a fire - turned out to be a broken door handle, which had left a woman trapped inside her flat.

A Cheshire police spokesman said: "This relates to an incident where a woman was trapped in a room due to broken door handle.

"Firefighters attended to release the woman and she was checked by paramedics."

He added: "The incident was initially reported as a fire in an bedroom so three fire engines were initially dispatched- from Runcorn, Widnes and Penketh.

"However, two of the crews were quickly released as soon as it became apparent that there was no fire and it was simply persons trapped in a bedroom.
