The Colorado Avalanche acquired Brock Nelson in a trade deadline deal with the New York Islanders last season, and now they've worked out an arrangement to keep him with the team for a few seasons longer.
Nelson and the Avs agreed to a three-year contract extension Wednesday, which will tie the veteran forward to the organization through the 2027-28 season. Nelson was set to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason, but instead he'll stick with Colorado where he played the final 19 games of the regular season, as well as seven playoff games.
The new contract will pay Nelson $7.5 million per season, and is worth a total of $22.5 million. In terms of average annual value, the 33-year-old immediately becomes the second-highest earning forward on the team behind only Nathan MacKinnon and the third-highest paid player on the roster, also trailing star defenseman Cale Makar.
Nelson registered 13 points in 19 games in the regular season for the Avs and added four points in seven games in the postseason. The veteran spent his entire career with the Islanders prior to the trade, where he amassed 574 points in 920 career games.
