Broadmeadow Magic build momentum as rain ruins play for others in NPL NSW

Jacob Dowse produced goals either side of half-time to set up Broadmeadow's 3-1 win over Edgeworth at Magic Park on Saturday in the only round-five match of National Premier Leagues Northern NSW to go ahead.

All four other fixtures were washed out as rain continues to wreak havoc on the competition. After five rounds, Weston, Lake Macquarie and Valentine have played just once while Maitland, Olympic, Lambton and Adamstown have had two games each.

Magic have played the most of any side with four games complete.

Coach Damian Zane was pleased to post another victory after beating Cooks Hill 4-1 in round four but wants Magic to kill off their opposition earlier.

"We've scored seven goals in the past two games but it feels actually disappointing because we're creating so many opportunities," Zane said.

"It just feels like we're not burying teams when we've got them in a position to do so. We sort of let Edgy back into a game that we dominated a large portion of.

"It was 2-0 and, realistically, it could've been three or four and then the game is over. But 2-0 and then they score and all of a sudden you're hanging on there for dear life.

"But overall, there were plenty of positives and I haven't been upset with any of our performances."

Magic's Jarred Baker hit the woodwork in the 22nd minute then Dowse's header from the rebound was denied by the Edgeworth goalkeeper.

Dowse found the breakthrough in the 42nd when he slipped beyond the Eagles defence to meet a long ball into the right corner and finished at the near post.

He made it 2-0 in the 56th when Edgeworth's defence failed to get the ball under control in the middle of the pitch and the lethal Magic attacker picked it up just over halfway then sped towards goal and calmly slotted into the net from just inside the area.

The Eagles struck back in the 73rd when Archie Finn headed in at the back post. Edgeworth came close to equalising minutes later but were denied by the woodwork.

Magic substitute Jayden Stewardson sealed the win in the 88th when he combined with Bailey Wells and finished from close range.

Points: Charlestown 7, Magic 6, Maitland 4, Weston 3, Valentine 3, Lambton 3, Olympic 3, Edgeworth 3, Lake Macquarie 1, Cooks Hill 1, Adamstown 0.
