Broadband offers for Black Friday 2022

In the run-up to this year’s Black Friday, broadband providers have announced a range of discounts and deals. Here’s a round-up of the latest deals.

Virgin Media

Virgin Media has opted to cut prices on a selection of its broadband packages.

The provider has cut prices on its M125 tariff — which offers average download speeds of 132Mbps — from £44 per month to £26 per month, for 18 months.

Virgon’s M250 tariff is also being offered at a discount. The tariff comes with average download speeds of 132Mbps, and is now £30 a month for 28 months, down from its usual £50.

Finally, Virgin Media’s M350 service has been discounted from £56 to £34 per month, and offers average download speeds of 362Mbps.

These deals are only available if you live in an area that’s serviced by Virgin Media’s cable broadband infrastructure.

Sky

Sky is reducing prices on three broadband and TV packages for the week until 28 November. Deals start from £23 per month.

Its Superfast 35 tariff, which offers average download speeds of 36Mbps and pay as you talk calls, is now £23 per month — down from £28 per month.

The Superfast tariff comes with average download speeds of 145 Mbps, and is on offer for £25 per month, while it’s usually £35.50 per month.

Finally, Sky’s Ultrafast tariff, with average download speeds of 145Mbps, is down from £40 per month to £30.

All offers are for 18-month contracts, and customers will need to pay a set-up fee of £19.95.

BT

BT is halving the price of a number of tariffs for six months.

Its 24-month Fibre Essential package currently costs £14.9 for the first six months, after which it reverts back to £28.99 per month for the remaining 18 months of the contract. This deal offers average download speeds of 36Mbps

BT’s Fibre 1 package — which providers average download speeds of 50Mbps — costs £14.99 per month for the first six months. From month seven, the price is £29.99 per month.

Elsewhere, the Full Fibre 100 tariff offers average download speeds of 150Mbps, and comes with a half-price fee for the first six months. New customers also receive a free Mastercard reward card, pre-loaded with £50 that can be spent anywhere online.

Plusnet

Plusnet is throwing its hat into the ring with three Black Friday deals.

Its Full Fibre 74 tariff is reduced from £30 per month to £23.99 per month — but customers will have to sign on for a 24-month contract.

Plusnet’s Full Fibre 145 deal is now £27.99 per month, down from £35 per month. Again, this deal locks customers in for 24 months.

Finally, the provider’s half-gig Full Fibre 500 tariff is currently reduced to £37.99 per month from £47 per month.

What is Black Friday 2022?

While the concept originated in America, Black Friday has become a yearly mainstay for many UK businesses.

Black Friday — the last Friday in November — unofficially marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, just after American Thanksgiving.

The idea is thought to have been around since the 1950s. Originally, it described the upswing in shopping traffic and workers calling in sick following Thanksgiving.

A more accepted — though unofficial — explanation holds that Black Friday is the day of the year when loss-making retailers start to make profits. In other words, they move from ‘in the red’ to ‘in the black’.

Whatever the origin of Black Friday, retailers have latched onto the day to offer attention-grabbing deals and discounts.

More recently, the Monday after Black Friday has been dubbed ‘Cyber Monday’, the busiest day of the year for online shopping in the UK.
