Broadband delay could halt coronavirus vaccine rollout at Ayrshire centre

A COVID-19 vaccination centre in Hurlford is at risk because of delayed broadband installation.

Hurlford Community Centre needs the fast internet access so the building can be used as a base to distribute the injections to people.

It is claimed Virgin Media promised to install the broadband in December.

But now that date has shifted to Wednesday, February 3, which is too late.

Hurlford Community Association trustee treasurer Thomas McEwen said: “The community centre has been identified as a vaccination centre.

“We were told the current WiFi is not up to the job.

“If we don’t get this up and running it will be detrimental to the population.

“The more people we can get vaccinated the better.”

Mr McEwen has been trying to sort out the service over the festive holiday.

He said: “I feel like I’m pulling my hair out.

“It is only a 10-metre cable run. I’m a Virgin Media customer myself and feel appalled at the way we are being treated.

“They have given me all sorts of excuses.

“I first contacted Virgin Media and explained the situation and was given an installation date of December 21. Nothing happened. I contacted them again.

“I was told installation would take place between Christmas and New Year. Again, no show.”

Mr McEwen described next month’s latest proposed date as “absolutely no use.”

Kilmarnock East and Hurlford councillor Barry Douglas has also contacted Virgin Media to ask the firm to hurry up.

He said: “I would hate to think Virgin Media are holding up a local centre where my constituents can get vaccinated.”

The Labour and Co-operative Party politician said the company have been laying cables in Hurlford.

A Virgin Media Business spokesperson said:“We are working collaboratively with Hurlford Community Association to connect the Community Centre to our ultrafast network as quickly as possible.”

GPs are set to issue the coronavirus vaccination across Scotland. Crosshouse Hospital will also distribute vaccinations.

Community centres and other venues have also been identified as vaccination hubs while more than 1100 locations will be used for the mass vaccination.
