Brixton fire: Man arrested on suspicion of arson after blaze on Electric Avenue

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of arson after a fire on Electric Avenue in Brixton.

The Metropolitan Police said the man in his 40s remained in police custody after the blaze on Monday morning.

London Fire Brigade said a storage area at the back of a mixed-used building was alight.

Around 70 firefighters from Brixton, Peckham, Lambeth, West Norwood, and surrounding fire stations were dispatched to tackle the blaze.

Police said a crime scene has been established and emergency services remain at the scene.

Brixton Tube station has reopened after closing on Monday, but road closures are still in place and people being asked to avoid the area.

Local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police on Monday afternoon read: “Officers are currently supporting the London Fire Brigade following a fire at a building on Electric Avenue, Brixton.

“No injuries have been reported. Surrounding buildings have been evacuated.

“One suspect, a man in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of arson. He remains in police custody.”

The force was first alerted to the fire just after 9.40am. The fire was brought under control by around 1pm.

Videos shared on social media show large plumes of smoke rising into the sky as members of the public gather to watch the unfolding scene.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police and the Brigade.
