Brixton fire: Residents evacuated as firefighters battle huge waste facility blaze in south London

Firefighters have battled through the night to tackle a huge blaze at a waste facility in south London.

Seventy tonnes of household rubbish were alight at the plant in Brixton.

London Fire Brigade was called to Belinda Road at around 5.10pm on Thursday evening following more than 30 calls.

Footage showed dark smoke billowing from the facility, visible from Brockwell Park, as crews worked to tackle the blaze.

Nine residents from surrounding properties were evacuated as a precaution.

Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire under control.

The waste was inside a metal structure at the transfer facility with on-site machinery being used to help the firefighters access hot spots.

There are no reports of injury. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The brigade advised nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed. Road closures were in place between Hinton Road and Loughborough Park.

Station Commander Ken Spratt, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the night to bring the fire at the waste transfer site under control safely.

"On-site machinery was used to turn over the waste so that firefighters could access hot spots.

"The fire produced smoke in the vicinity, which was being carried by the wind. As a precaution, we advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area where possible. There were road closures in place between Hinton Road and Loughborough Park".
