Brittany Mahomes seeks IV drip to recover from Super Bowl celebrations

NFL: Super Bowl LVIII-Kansas City Chiefs Celebration

IV Therapy: Exploring the Trend for Hangover Relief

After a weekend of celebrating her husband's Super Bowl win, Brittany Mahomes, wife of football star Patrick Mahomes, turned to IV therapy to help her recover. She shared a photo on her Instagram Story, showcasing her refueling session with an IV drip. As the popularity of IV therapy continues to rise, more people are turning to this treatment for various purposes, including combating hangovers.

While it remains unclear which specific treatment Brittany received, she tagged the co-owner of Gen 3 IV, a local IV hydration and wellness company. This company offers a range of options, including a 'Hangover Mix' designed to alleviate dehydration and nausea after a night of heavy drinking.

In recent years, IV therapy has gained attention as a potential remedy for feeling under the weather due to illness, jet lag, and yes, even excessive partying. Individuals seeking relief from hangovers may visit IV therapy providers or have a nurse administer the treatment at their location of choice.

Dr. Travis Stork, an ER physician, host of The Doctors, and member of PEOPLE's Health Squad, shed light on the origins of this trend. He mentioned that IV therapy initially gained popularity as a hangover cure due to a blend of essential vitamins such as B vitamins, vitamin C, and magnesium.

However, Dr. Stork emphasizes that IV therapy should not be seen as a magical cure-all. It can provide hydration and replenish electrolytes, which may be depleted after excessive alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that there is no definitive cure for a hangover apart from time, as many of the symptoms stem from the accumulation of alcohol metabolites.

If you find yourself considering an IV drip for a hangover, Dr. Stork advises against it and recommends relying on the tried-and-tested methods. Instead of opting for an expensive infusion, he suggests staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids with electrolytes before going to bed and in the morning. Additionally, consuming a nutrient-rich meal can help your body recover. Ultimately, the most effective remedy for a hangover is simply allowing time for your body to heal.

As the IV therapy trend continues to expand, it's crucial to approach it with a discerning eye. While it may offer some benefits, it is not a guaranteed solution for all ailments. If you choose to explore this avenue for hangover relief or other purposes, it is always wise to consult with a healthcare professional and consider a well-rounded approach to your overall well-being.

Remember, taking care of your body through healthy habits, moderation in alcohol consumption, and allowing time for recovery remains the most reliable way to overcome the effects of a night of indulgence. So the next time you find yourself experiencing a hangover, reach for a glass of water and a nutritious meal, along with the mantra of 'never again.'
