Britt Assombalonga 'close' to Rangers deal as striker prepared to take wage cut for Ibrox switch

Rangers are closing in on the signing of Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga, according to a report.

The DR Congo frontman has been told he can leave the Riverside and is highly unlikely to play for Neil Warnock's men again.

But the one-time £15million attacker is reportedly willing to take a major wage cut to seal a move to Glasgow and join Steven Gerrard's men this summer.

TEAMtalk say Assombalonga is wanted by a host of Championship clubs, as well as French and German sides, but he wants to make the move north.

Assombalonga failed to hit the heights expected of him when he joined Boro in a big money deal from Nottingham Forest but has hit 49 goals in 167 appearances for the Championship outfit.

Rangers have a number of striking options with Alfredo Morelos, Cedric Itten, Kemar Roofe and Jermain Defoe, but there are doubts over whether all will be at Ibrox next season.

Morelos has regularly been linked with big money moves away while veteran Defoe is yet to be offered a new by the club.

They have also been heavily linked with a move for Oostende striker Fashion Sakala, with it being reported that a deal was close for him too.
