Brits urged to book staycations to save UK’s tourism industry amid coronavirus crisis

Brits have been urged to book staycations to save the UK’s tourism industry.

B&Bs, cottages and hotels can reopen their doors on Saturday.

Theme parks, zoos, museums and heritage sites will be up and running too.

Tourism chiefs say it gives Brits the chance to help claw back 2020 losses of £37billion – £15billion of that down to fewer visitors from overseas.

VisitEngland has launched a UK-wide industry standard mark “We’re Good To Go” to be awarded to businesses which meet government guidelines on Covid-19.

Director Patricia Yates said: “Tourism needs Brits to make sure it gets back on its feet.

"We have incredible places on our doorstep so we’d ask people to consider revisiting or exploring somewhere new and having an extra break at home this year.”

Bed and Breakfast Association chairman David Weston said: “We’ve seen a surge in bookings since Boris Johnson ’s announcement.

“We are all preparing to be Covid safe, from deep cleaning rooms in between visits to serving plated breakfasts instead of buffets. We will be safe and people can relax with peace of mind. Brits can save the industry by booking with us.”

Canal holiday operator Black Prince has seen enquiries rocket 36 per cent.

Leighton Jones, head of operations, said: “We’re getting calls from families with school age children and groups wanting more than one boat. This suggests extended families are planning holidays in ‘bubbles’.”

Rockcliffe Hall Hotel in Hurworth, near Darlington, has replaced its spa with treats in a box so guests can pamper themselves.

Managing director Jason Adams said: “We’ve come up with new ways to make sure guests get the service they’d expect.”

The staycation appeal comes amid cut-price deals to the Med as Europe seeks to welcome Brits too.

Some are as low as £150pp for seven nights – half price. But experts warn there may be price rises once “air bridge” destinations are confirmed later this week.
