Many of us turn to comfort food in times of need, with a recent survey uncovering Britons' top emotional support meals. The study, commissioned by glucose monitoring app Abbott’s Lingo, found that the classic bacon sandwich reigns supreme as the go-to comfort food for 38% of respondents. Following closely behind are fish and chips (30%) and pizza (27%).
Other popular choices among Brits include cheeseburgers (24%), cheese on toast (22%), and full English breakfasts (22%). The list also features roast chicken with all the trimmings, steak and chips, and lasagne, each garnering 17% of the votes.
Despite the short-term mood boost provided by carb-heavy meals, such as those on the list, 42% of respondents reported experiencing a subsequent crash. Dr. Punam Krishan, a GP working with Lingo by Abbott, recommends opting for protein-rich meals with healthy fats and non-starchy vegetables for more stable glucose levels and long-term health benefits.
Food plays a significant role in Britons' daily lives, with many spending up to two hours discussing, planning, and preparing meals. Londoners lead the pack, dedicating an average of three hours a day to food-related conversations, while residents of Cambridge spend the least time at 1.5 hours.
Interestingly, food has surpassed weather as a popular topic of conversation, with 29% of respondents admitting to discussing food more than the weather. For 16%, food is their favorite subject to talk about.
Overall, Britons' emotional support meals offer a glimpse into their culinary preferences and the role food plays in their lives. Whether it's a bacon sandwich or a hearty roast dinner, these comfort foods provide a sense of familiarity and solace during challenging times.
