Brits to bask in scorching April heatwave

Forecasters are predicting a heatwave in April, with potential highs of 26C.

The hot weather is thanks to plumes of warm air coming from Africa.

And it means we could be set for the hottest April on record.

"With computer models strongly favouring a warm spring, there is potential for the record for the hottest spring to be challenged.

"Highs of 26C are likely in April. Plumes of warm air from Africa are expected.

"And there is an increased chance of a hot and settled summer due to the trend for more high pressure, which brings hot conditions in summer,"   The Weather Outlook's Brian Gaze told the Express .

The Met Office said warm temperatures from March to May are more likely than cooler conditions.

Its three-month forecast reads: "For March-May, above-average temperatures are more likely than below-average.

"The probability UK average temperatures will fall into the warmest of our five categories is 50 per cent. The coldest category is 10 per cent.

"Some long-range prediction systems indicate an increased chance of high pressure to the south of the UK."

This week it will remain largely dry with warm temperatures and highs of 17C.

However, it begins to turn chilly by Sunday, March 31 with a few scattered showers in places.

The Met Office says: "Next week will be off to a chilly but mainly fine start on Monday, though it will gradually become more changeable through the week.

"There will be rain and strong winds at times, mainly in the northwest of the UK, where gales are likely. Some rain is possible in the south too, but there will be more in the way of dry weather.

"The unsettled weather is likely to continue into mid April. It is likely to be fairly cold through the period, with some overnight frost possible, but feeling a little warmer in the afternoon in any sunny spells."
