Brits to bask in 20C heatwave as warm weather FINALLY on way following days of downpours

Many parts of Britain could soon be enjoying 20C highs and clear skies as downpours gradually begin to clear.

New weather maps from independent forecaster WXCharts show widespread rain on Wednesday and Thursday before drier weather starts to move in on Friday.

This will be accompanied by a rise in daytime temperatures, as data shows 19.8C likely on Sunday.

It comes after the three-day Coronation Bank Holiday weekend served up a mix of showers, spells of sunshine and even some more adverse weather, with yellow warnings for thunderstorms remaining in place on Tuesday afternoon in the south of England.

An advisory notice from the Met Office reads: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms will develop through Tuesday, some becoming slow moving across more southern and eastern parts of England during the afternoon and evening.

"A few places could see 20 mm of rain within an hour and possibly 30-40 mm in 2-3 hours, along with lightning and hail."

In a video on Monday evening, Senior Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst explained that the recent wet weather had been caused by a powerful burst from the jet stream blowing in frontal systems sitting over the Atlantic - but said this would now start to subside as the stream diverts.

He explained: "We get a bit of a cut-off low [pressure] developing, so it means unsettled weather, sunshine and showers. But towards the end of the week and into the weekend, yes there is still a bit of a jet stream left but the vast majority actually pushes to the northwest, and that allows high pressure to start building into Friday."

Giving the latest temperature forecasts for the rest of the week, Mr Dewhurst said daytime readings of 18C in the southeast could jump to 20C by Friday, potentially lasting through the weekend.

Areas further north can meanwhile expect the mercury to reach 14C-16C, with some showers still likely.

The Eurovision Song Contest final at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool on Saturday is currently forecast to remain mostly dry and mild, with sunny intervals becoming cloudy by early evening.
