Brits on Hungary holidays face tough coronavirus testing measures

Brits heading to Hungary for a summer holiday this year face arduous restrictions.

The country is popular for city breaks, with 30 million tourists visiting the capital city Budapest each year.

But people travelling over there this year face strict entry requirements to prove they do not have coronavirus.

Countries such as Albania, Kosovo, Belarus and Ukraine are considered high risk and citizens may not enter the country unless they have a permanent residence permit.

The UK is considered an amber country - meaning travellers face tough rules.

To avoid having to quarantine for two weeks, holidaymakers must provide two negative COVID-19 tests, taken 48 hours apart, within five days prior to arrival.

They will also have to undergo a medical examination for coronavirus on arrival.

Hungary was amongst the 73 countries announced on July 10 that people living in England can travel to without having to quarantine upon return.

Currently, there are 484 active cases of coronavirus in Hungary, and the country has recorded 596 deaths.

Holidaymakers must wear a face covering in shops, restaurants and bars, and when using taxis or public transport.

Outdoor attractions are open, meaning Budapest's famous outdoor swimming pools may be available.

But mass events are banned until at least 15 August.

Gergely Gulyás, the Head of Hungary’s Prime Minister’s Office, said the country was keen to halt a second wave of infections

He said last week: “Hungary is today among the safest countries in Europe. But given new outbreaks around the world, the government is putting the health and safety of Hungarians foremost and is doing everything possible to prevent the virus’s return.”
