Brits heading for Mallorca and Ibiza risk 100 euro fine for not wearing face masks

Brits visiting the Balearic islands will have to wear masks from this weekend or face being fined 100 euros.

The regional government is implementing the new rule, following on from a similar decision taken by Catalonia.

An official order is to be published either on Friday or Saturday and will apply in all the Balearics, including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, according to the Spanish press.

The decision has been taken in a bid to prevent the spread of new coronavirus cases already being recorded in the holiday islands.

The regional executive plans to include mandatory obligations in places such as beaches, swimming pools and sports activities.

In addition, it is planned to order some sectors to wear masks at work, especially those who more contact with other people, and the regular use of masks on terraces.

Everyone over the age of six will need to wear a mask, except for people who cannot do it for health reasons that are justified.

Until now the use of a mask was only mandatory when the safety distance of one and a half metres could not be kept, as well as in shops.

Failure to wear a mask will result in a penalty of 100 euros.

The health authorities are stressing that the virus is still present and three new outbreaks were recorded on Wednesday making nine in all.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that, although there is no solid scientific evidence, it is possible that the new coronavirus can be transmitted through the air in closed, crowded and poorly ventilated places.

The Balearic government says it is taking the decision for safety reasons and in view of string of illegal parties which have been held in Mallorca and Ibiza, with large numbers of people, no masks and no social distancing.

The new rule will apply to all residents and tourists.
