Three Brits dead after Ukraine Airlines plane crash in Iran

Three Brits are among 176 people killed after a plane crashed minutes after takeoff in Iran.

Local media had this morning reported that British citizens were on board the jet which suffered engine failure before the crash.

And  Vadym Prystaiko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, confirmed the sad news British citizens were on board the Boeing 737 jet which suffered an engine fire before the horror crash - writes Mirror Online .

Mr Prystaiko said: "We are currently aware of the following information on the countries of origin of those killed in the crash #PS752 : Iran - 82; Canada - 63; Ukraine - 2 + 9 (crew); Sweden - 10; Afghanistan - 4; Germany - 3; United Kingdom - 3.

"We express our condolences. The Ukrainian authorities continue to investigate."

However, the Foreign Office says it has not yet received any reports of British casualties.

The Ukrainian aircraft carrying around 170 passengers and crew crashed close to Iran's capital, Tehran early on Wednesday morning.

The plane had taken off from Imam Khomeini International Airport, the report said.

It went down in farmland outside of the city.

Authorities initially blamed a mechanical problem for the crash.

The crash came hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack targeting two bases in Iraq housing US forces in retaliation for the killing of Revolutionary Guard General Qassem Soleimani.

Kyiv outlet Obozrevatel reported among the victims are 73 Canadian citizens, 71 Iranians, six Afghans, eight from Sweden, and four Germans.

The Canadians were mainly students, according to the news source.

It is believed they were mainly of Iranian origin and returning for their studies.

The Ukrainian dead were reported to number 15 including the crew.

The breakdown of the passenger list had not been confirmed by official sources.

Boeing released a brief statement in the aftermath and said it was aware of media reports about the disaster and it is gathering more information.

Rescue teams have been sent to the crash site but the head of Iran's Red Crescent told state media that it was "impossible" for anyone to have survived the crash.

The Ukraine president, Volodymyr Zelensky, cut short a trip to Oman and is returning to Kyiv, the government said in a statement.
