Brits face being banned from French bars under Covid passport rules

Brits holidaying in France face being banned from most entertainment if they can't get their health pass recognised by venues.

As of Monday, people up and down the country will have to show a health pass proving they have been jabbed or have tested negative to Covid in order to go to any bar or tourist site.

The pass will be required to access almost everything, including restaurants, swimming pools, museums and nightclubs.

It will also be needed to access non-emergency treatment in a hospital or travel on an intercity train.

Brits will be flocking to France after it was taken off the government's 'amber plus' travel list, meaning those returning from country who have received both doses of a Covid vaccine will no longer have to self-isolate.

But President Emmanuel Macron's controversial new policy forcing all people to show a health pass risks jeopardising holidays amid reports of British NHS passes not being accepted.

Proof of vaccination for Brits comes in the form of an NHS QR code that should be downloaded and then uploaded to the French Covid app.

But the Mail online reported being turned away from French venues as they failed to recognised the pass on several occasions this past week.

There are also concerns for 20 per cent of the UK population who doesn't have a smartphone as provisions for paper passes are yet to be made.

French ambassador Catherine Colonna said "any specific query should be addressed to the French consulate" in the UK, but the Mirror was unable to get through to it when we tried.

It comes as hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets in France to protest against the strict measures, which Macron introduced to help contain a fourth wave of COVID-19 infections spreading across France.

The protesters in France accuse Macron of trampling on their freedoms and treating citizens unequally, but Macron hit back saying freedoms carry responsibilities that include protecting the health of others.

Health Ministry data showed nine in every 10 COVID patients admitted to intensive care in late July had not been vaccinated.

A majority of French support the health pass, surveys show, the announcement of which sparked a jump in vaccine uptake, with two thirds now having one dose while more than 55 per cent of the population have had both.

Similar health passes - which show proof of vaccination or a recent negative test - have been introduced in other European countries but France's pass and its mandatory vaccine order for health workers are perhaps the most far-reaching.

France's highest constitutional authority, however, ruled on Thursday that the legislation complied with the republic's founding charter.
