Brits can travel to Greece from July 15 after travel ban is lifted

British tourists will now be able to enter Greece from July 15.

The country previously lifted restrictions on flights from EU countries to its two main airports in mid-June.

It was expected that UK travellers would be able to fly to Greece on July 1 - but the ban on Britain was continued, alongside Sweden and several other countries with high rates of infection.

But government spokesman Stelios Petsas confirmed today that summer holidays in Greece are back on the cards.

He said: "In cooperation with the British government, and following advice of experts, the government announces the resumption of direct flights from the United Kingdom to all airports of the country from July 15."

The ban was extended due to the UK's poor coronavirus record, which currently has 241,196 active cases.

By comparison, Greece has managed to control the coronavirus pandemic with 1,953 active cases currently.

At the time, Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reportedly said: "The whole opening procedure is dynamic and the data will be continuously evaluated."

It comes as the Department for Transport released a list of 74 countries and territories which English tourists can visit without having to quarantine on their return.

Last week, the Foreign Office also changed its travel advice for 67 destinations, to allow for non-essential travel between them.

Greece was included on the list, despite the ban until July 15, alongside popular destinations such as Spain, France and Italy.

This means travellers will not have to quarantine when they return home.

Last week, the Prime Minister's father faced criticism after travelling to Greece before the ban was lifted.

Stanley Johnson flew to Athens on Wednesday via Bulgaria to get to his holiday villa.

He defended his decision - saying he needed to “Covid-proof" the property and claimed he had been travelling to the villa on "essential business".

He said: “I came here to have a quiet time, to organise the house.

“I think I’m going to go back on July 10. So, I have just got one week to get everything organised.

"Got a whole lot of instructions about how to make the place Covid proof.”

At the time, Foreign Office guidance said Brits should avoid all but essential travel.

But the PM's father said he wouldn't defend the decision - and called for an 'air bridge' to be set up between the two countries.

He added: “I am not going to say whether my actions were correct or not, but in any case what happened, happened.

“How wonderful it would be if, quite quickly, if the two governments could come to some arrangement?”
