Brits can enter Spain without quarantine - but isolation will still be enforced when they get back

British tourists will be allowed to enter Spain without going into quarantine when they arrive.

But the same may not be true for Spanish visitors, or for Brits returning from a trip to Spain.

Spanish officials have called on the UK to remove its insistence on a 14-day quarantine for anyone entering the country. The rules, which are being enforced in a bid to combat the spread of coronavirus, would make it effectively impossible for people living in Spain to make a short trip or holiday to the UK.

And, whilst a lack of quarantine will mean that many may be able to take planned summer holidays in Spain, some could struggle to take holidays if they are unable to observe a quarantine when they return, due to work or other commitments.

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya told BBC News: “We will allow British visitors to enter Spain just like the rest of the European Union as from June 21, freely and without the need for a quarantine.

“We’re discussing with the UK authorities to see if they would do the same on their side, we nevertheless are doing this out of respect for the 400,000 British citizens that have a second residence in Spain and are dying to benefit from their homes in our country.

“We do hope they (the UK Government) will be sensitive to the 250,000 Spaniards that are also living in the UK and would like to enter the UK without a quarantine.”

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is still advising against "all but essential" international travel.

It still says that all international travellers will have to self-isolate for 14 days after entering the UK from abroad.

The FCO recently updated its advice regarding travel to Spain to reflect the fact that British citizens, like those from the European Union, will be allowed to enter Spain from June 21.
