Brits being slapped with 'vegan tax' for eating out - and it's an extra £15

Vegans are spending a whopping 66% more than people with no dietary requirements when eating out.

That's according to new figures from Caterer.com, who looked into the prices people with different requirements are paying at restaurants.

The found vegans pay the most - at £37.55 for an average meal. That's £14.88 more than someone who'll eat anything and £9.43 more than a vegetarian.

People who are allergic or intolerant to specific ingredients pay the second most at £10.80 more than than people with no requirements.

Perhaps worse, the price isn't the only problem.

Some 57% of selective eaters feel restaurants don't provide as many options for their diet, 42% feel judged by staff, 40% feel judged by fellow diners and 47% worry about a mistake with their meal.

"We eat out to fill up on delicious food, relax with great company and - let’s face it – avoid the hassle of cooking. But people with dietary requirements don’t always get to enjoy these things as much as they should," Caterer.com said in its report into selective eating .

To help, diners thought having things like allergen aware staff (49%), flexible substitutions (43%) and making sure allergens are listed on menus (43%) would make life easier.

Neil Pattison, sales director at Caterer.com, said: "The last thing consumers want is to book a table only to find themselves in the embarrassing position where one of their party simply is left out with little or nothing to eat."

Honest Burger marketing director Meg Ellis said: "It’s an interesting and rewarding challenge for our sector.

"We put a lot of effort into training our staff around dietary needs and preferences and ensuring our processes are robust and externally audited so people can feel reassured before their first bite."
