Britons would rather spend time online or watching TV than cook, according to new survey

Britons would rather spend time online or watching TV than cooking or spending time with family according to a new survey.

Only around a quarter of Britons claim they're passionate about food and cooking - with just an average of 51 minutes a day spent in the kitchen. A further 34 minutes was spent with family.

However, more than three hours are spent online. Watching TV accounts for a further three hours, and we spend more than two hours on the phone.

The study by Mecca ranked the UK’s most time-consuming activities based on Office of National Statistics data to highlight just how little time Brits now spend in the kitchen per day.

As a result Britain fails to meet the top ten countries for cooking time, coming in 13th. India tops the table, spending an average 113 minutes in the kitchen every day, with Ukraine second at 112 minutes.

Simple dishes such as porridge and beans on toast make up some of the UK's top ten meals to cook. As householders bail on cooking, an estimated £10 billion is expected to be spent on takeaways this year.
