Britons are waking up to frost and fog after temperatures plunged to as low as -4C across parts of the country overnight.

A severe weather warning for snow and ice was in place for much of northern Scotland, with locals being warned of potential travel disruption.

The yellow alert is in place until 9am on Tuesday.

There will be frost seen across large parts of the UK this morning, with a dry day expected but some scattered showers across the south-east, forecasters warned.

Temperatures were expected to plummet last night, with the Met Office saying parts of the UK could see the mercury sink to as low as -3C or -4C.

Sub-zero temperatures could even reach as low as -5C as Wednesday approaches, Forecaster Simon Partridge said.

Looking forward, strong gusts are likely to batter the west coast of the UK from tomorrow. A separate yellow warning for wind has been issued.

Images from areas in Scotland showed a blanketing of snow on Monday, with Balmoral looking picturesque under a white cover.
