Britney Spears to perform at 2016 MTV Video Music Awards

For the first time in nearly a decade, Britney Spears will perform at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The pop star will return to the VMA stage for the debut live performance of her comeback single, "Make Me," the network announced Tuesday.

Spears is in the middle of an aggressive comeback ahead of her long-in-the-works ninth album, "Glory," which will arrive on Aug. 26 _ just two days before the VMAs.

Her new single (it features rising rap star G-Eazy) is the lead from the new album _ the follow-up to 2013's "Britney Jean" _ that sees Spears veering away from her tried-and-true formula of high octane dance-pop.

The lush, down-tempo bedroom number showcases a more subdued vocal from Spears, offering a refreshing departure from the Vocoder and Auto-Tune effects that have dotted her most recent work. Her decision to debut the track on the VMAs is appropriate.

Aside from the obvious promotional boost it'll surely provide the record, some of Spears' most memorable performances have happened on that stage.

Whether she was rolling around in a nude bodysuit, slinking around the stage while carrying a live python or locking lips with Madonna _ Spears has nearly done it all on the VMA stage.

She even fizzled out there, with an infamous 2007 performance that torpedoed a comeback attempt and made her a punchline at a time when her personal life was already a tabloid fixture.

She's since recovered from that disastrous VMA moment by finding more hits, making Las Vegas cool for a new generation of superstars with a popular residency that continues to pack in audiences and returning to the VMAs in 2011 _ as an honoree _ to accept the coveted Video Vanguard Award.

The question is, can she finally redeem herself on the VMA stage?
